Allmendinger tops Montreal practice

He lost a whole qualifying session yesterday due to a failed turbo, but AJ Allmendinger showed he was ready to fight for pole position today by finishing morning practice 0.724 seconds clear of his nearest pursuer

The Forsythe Championship Racing driver's laptime of 1:20.280 was an average of 121.480mph, and was some 0.9 seconds quicker than Sebastien Bourdais' qualifying time from yesterday.

The Newman/Haas Racing driver only completed nine laps - and was fourth quickest - when he clipped a kerb at the final turn, and pushed out wide to spear into the wall on the pit straight.

The famous 'Wall of Champions' - so-called for claiming Jacques Villeneuve, Michael Schumacher and Damon Hill in Formula One in the late 1990s - wrenched the right-front suspension of the Champ Car title holder's Lola beyond immediate repair.

That allowed Paul Tracy to complete a Forsythe 1-2, a few hundredths ahead of Justin Wilson (RuSPORT). Oriol Servia and Nelson Philippe continued their strong form for PKV Racing and CTE Racing-HVM respectively.

As well as seeing Frenchman Bourdais make an error, the Quebec crowd will also have been disappointed to see their local heroes Alex Tagliani (Team Australia) and Andrew Ranger (Conquest Racing) pipped by their respective teammates Will Power and Charles Zwolsman.

Ranger lost a lot of time when his car stopped out on the circuit mid-session.
