Ecclestone not convinced by A1GP
Formula One supremo Bernie Ecclestone has questioned A1GP's capabilities to become a GP2-like winter series in the future
Ecclestone is keen to set up an Asian-based series to run during GP2's off-season, but, amids speculation that he has been discussing a deal with A1GP chairman Tony Teixeira, the Briton says is not convinced the series would be the right base.
"There is a future for a series which brings in drivers who can step up to F1," he was quoted as saying by the Daily Express. "I'm not sure A1 does that. Maybe there is room for a GP3 series, which would also provide another road to F1."
Despite widespread reports that a deal was being discussed this weekend at Brands Hatch, autosport.com understands that Ecclestone did not appear at the British circuit during the weekend.
"I hope things go well for Tony," Ecclestone added. "An awful lot will depend on if we get another series running in Asia."
Last weekend's Brands Hatch event marked the end of A1GP's second season.
