Briscoe and Maassen win for Porsche
Ryan Briscoe and Sascha Maassen took their second consecutive overall victory in the American Le Mans Series at Lime Rock on Saturday
Briscoe took advantage of fresher tyres in the final stint of the race to pass the other Penske Porsche RS Spyder which had led throughout in the hands of Romain Dumas and Timo Bernhard.
The two LMP2 cars had made their final stops at the same time during a caution period, but Briscoe's team opted for new tyres, while Bernhard only took on fuel.
"It was clear that taking new tires during the stop was a big advantage," said Briscoe. "After the stop, we were much quicker.
"I got a great run down the hill and Timo was held up by a GT2 car and I sailed down the front straight. It was a very safe pass and we needed it for the championship."
Highcroft Racing completed an all-LMP2 podium with their Acura, while the Dyson Racing Porsche took fourth ahead of the leading LMP1 car.
Allan McNish and Dindo Capello took class honours in their R10, which had run as high as second in the early stages before both drivers had a spin during the race at the tight circuit.
"I could feel after a few laps that it could have been so easy to make a mistake," said Capello. "We had two options: cruise around to the end or push hard for the win.
"We tried to take the second approach. From the lap after the spin I tried to take care the rest of the way."
The second Audi was classified in 23rd place overall after Marco Werner suffered a suspension failure and crashed heavily at the final turn.
Oliver Gavin and Olivier Beretta took a narrow victory in GT1 ahead of their Corvette teammates Johnny O'Connell, while Flying Lizard Motorsports took their first GT2 win of the season, and the first ALMS victory for the new 997-type Porsche 911.
