BRDC submits Brit GP offer
The British Racing Drivers' Club has submitted a written formal offer to Formula One Management, Bernie Ecclestone's company which runs the commercial side of F1, to promote the British Grand Prix at Silverstone for the next three years. The BRDC acted before the end of September deadline to find a replacement to Interpublic, set by the FOM, was passed
"This offer has been made on terms that do not create a profit, and carry inherent commercial risk, for the BRDC," said BRDC chairman Ray Bellm. "However, in the interests of maintaining the British Grand Prix in the United Kingdom we are prepared as a club to make our contribution."
BRDC president Sir Jackie Stewart is hoping that the BRDC's intervention will secure the event's future. "The BRDC has hosted the British Grand Prix for a great many years and we cannot afford to bankrupt the club - but we don't need to make a profit out of it," he said.
"It [the deal on the table] is not going to make us any money but as long as we come out of it without losing a great deal of money then we are doing the right thing. I hope Bernie understands that - because keeping the race is important for the government, it's important for the sport and it is important for the BRDC. But it wasn't a question of getting the race at any price - we could not afford that."
