Autosport names McLaren M16 as greatest Indycar in 70th Anniversary issue

Autosport has selected the McLaren M16 as the greatest Indycar of all time and the legendary machine is featured in our 70th birthday celebration special, out on 19 November

Autosport Magazine

Autosport is the UK's must-read motorsport magazine! It is revered by fans and industry personnel alike as the ultimate source of motorsport news and analysis.

The first issue of Autosport magazine appeared on 25 August 1950 and as part of our celebrations we took on the challenge of selecting the greatest competition cars from each of the major international categories.

The three-time Indianapolis 500 winner, designed by Gordon Coppuck, won the Indycar contest and is the focus of one of the Great Car articles in the standalone 70th special.

Indycar expert David Malsher-Lopez has spoken to Coppuck and Johnny Rutherford, who took two of his three Indy 500 victories in the M16, to explain what made the car so good over six seasons.

It's not just about American single-seaters, our Technical Editor Jake Boxall-Legge also digs through NASCAR's history to select the top five machines from the highest level of American stock car competition.

As well as similar articles on the other winners of the Great Car debates, the special also includes interviews with some of the biggest names in motorsport.

Roger Penske is arguably the most important figure in American racing and he talks about his career, and how his team has been so successful for more than half a century.

Multiple Formula 1 world champion Lewis Hamilton, Le Mans legend Tom Kristensen, nine-time World Rally champion Sebastien Loeb, and British Touring Car giants Colin Turkington and Andy Rouse also talk about their illustrious careers and what makes them tick.

The theme of the special is 'The Greatest', so we've picked out some of the best motorsport events of the past seven decades too.

There's much more in the 196-page special, including an assessment of what the future of motorsport could look like, with the help of leading industry experts.

The 70th celebration includes some stunning photography from the Motorsport Images archive, as well as Giorgio Piola illustrations of the Mercedes W11, which secured the record-breaking seventh consecutive F1 constructors' crown for the pacesetting squad.
