Ammermuller tops first practice

Michael Ammermuller got reigning A1GP champions Team Germany off to a perfect start in Durban by setting the pace in the rookie session

The some-time Red Bull Formula One tester was over a second clear of the chasing pack in a crash-strewn session. Ex-DTM race-winner Marcel Fassler had been fastest for Team Switzerland in the first of the two 25-minute sessions, but he could not match Ammermuller's pace around the dusty and bumpy street track in the second period.

New Team Czech recruit Josef Kral had a tough A1GP debut. His early crash in the second session brought out the first of the red flags and was the end of his running. The second came after a sizeable shunt for Mexican David Garza, which tore off the right-hand side of his car as he whacked against the wall.

John Martin continued Team Australia's recent good form by bagging the third fastest time, just ahead of Team Malaysia's Fairuz Fauzy. Portuguese newcomer Filipe Albuquerque played himself in gently for Team Portugal, ending up 12th quickest, but free from damage.
