Watt double secures second place

Jason Watt clinched the runner-up spot in the Formula 3000 Championship by taking his second consecutive victory at the Nurburgring

The Dane held off champion Nick Heidfeld in an epic battle, the pair never more than a second apart throughout the 48 lap race distance.

The closest call came with six laps to go, when Heidfeld tried to drive around the outside into the Veedol chicane. Although he nosed ahead, the home hero was going too fast to make the corner and bounced over the grass, handing the advantage back to Watt.

Watt had taken the lead with an excellent start from the outside of row one, putting him well ahead of the first corner wheel-banging that left Justin Wilson crawling around with a puncture and Bruno Junqueira struggling with a buckled front wing.

Wilson hobbled back to the pits, inadvertently pushing Alex Yoong off the road en route, but retired. Junqueira eventually came in for a new wing but made little progress.

That left Max Wilson and Soheil Ayari to finish third and fourth after two uneventful drives. David Saelens narrowly held off Jamie Davies for fifth, while Kevin McGarrity held off a train of cars throughout the race to claim seventh place.

Several notable drivers hit trouble. Stephane Sarrazin had a spin while trying to pass McGarrity and dropped to the tail of the field, while Tomas Enge and Nicolas Minassian both went out with accident damage.

Ricardo Mauricio hit the tyre wall hard but was unhurt. His crash meant that the Red Bull Junior Team will not qualify for the series next season however.
