Qualifying: Sperafico out front

Ricardo Sperafico outpaced Bjorn Wirdheim by just 0.061s to claim pole position in qualifying for the Formula 3000 race at the A1-Ring in Austria today (Friday)

The Brazilian Coloni driver was aided in his quest by traffic, with Arden driver Wirdheim getting blocked on his best lap.

A slippery track led to many spins and offs during the session, which was enlivened by the characteristics of the Avon tyres. It took a full eight laps for the tyres to com into their optimum range, and then allowed drivers just one good lap before they started to lose grip and pace.

Vitantonio Liuzzi qualified third for Red Bull Junior, ahead of American former Champ Car driver Townsend Bell. Barcelona winner Giorgio Pantano was fifth, ahead of the sole Astromega car of Tony Schmidt. The team's second driver, Jeffrey van Hooydonk, failed to raise enough money to pay for his seat and has been forced to sit out the race, leaving the field with just 17 cars.
