Piccione Hails 'Best Race Ever'

Durago's Clivio Piccione was ecstatic after taking his first GP2 win in race two at the Nurburgring, having taken advantage of the opportunities presented to claim a strong win against the odds

Piccione started second on the grid but wasn't expected to feature strongly in the race, but he proved his doubters wrong by overtaking then leader Neel Jani and running away from the pack to win by almost seven seconds.

"It was amazing!" Piccione said after the race. "I didn't have a great start so I just drove my own race - I knew I had the pace from yesterday so I knew how good the car was, I just kept in the pack, and when I saw a few opportunities I grabbed them.

"When there was a little mess with Nico [Rosberg], [Nelson] Piquet and Jani I just went for it - I did an amazing overtake on Jani around the outside, and from there on I just put my foot down and concentrated on driving the car at the right speed, and I was gone."

After getting by Jani, Piccione was able to comfortably pull away, and he noted: "When you're racing in the pack it's hard [to be fast], because you've got a whole lot of aero and it's difficult to make your way through.

"When I passed [Jani], my car just settled down, with the right downforce and the clear air, and I was able to brake where I wanted to - because basically when you are behind someone you have to brake early and you can't do your own things - so when I got in the front I could do my own race.

"I think the way these cars are built you have a lot of overtaking opportunities," Piccione added, "and it's fantastic, amazing!

"I think this is my best race ever, for sure - if you think Formula One is boring, then you should look at us now!"
