Lopez grabs maiden GP2 pole

Jose Maria Lopez scored his first ever GP2 pole position ahead of this weekend's races at Magny-Cours

The Super Nova driver shot to the head of the timesheets early on in the 30-minute session and held on despite the top five being covered by under two tenths of a second.

Timo Glock carried on his strong form following his switch to iSport and will line up alongside Lopez on the front row for tomorrow's race.

Giorgio Pantano gave FMS their best qualifying performance of the season to take third, while runaway points leader Lewis Hamilton had to settle for fourth after hitting traffic on his final flying lap.

His closest title challenger Nelson Piquet Jr will start fifth. His hopes of pole came crashing down when he misjudged the chicane and launched the Piquet Sports car over the kerbs.

Lucas di Grassi's session was brought to a premature conclusion when Luca Filippi overshot his braking point at the Adelaide hairpin and whacked the back of the Durango car, taking off its rear wing in the impact.
