Hamilton tops Germany practice

After an unusually below-par performance last time out at Magny-Cours, Lewis Hamilton returned to his favoured position at the head of the timesheets in GP2 free practice at Hockenheim

In an eventful session Hamilton clocked the fastest time of 1:24.0 to set his weekend off on a positive footing. BCN driver Hiro Yoshimoto was an impressive second quickest ahead of Magny-Cours polesitter Jose Maria Lopez and current GP2 form man Timo Glock.

Lopez was one of the many spinners as was Briton Adam Carroll who ended the session back in 19th place.

Nicolas Lapierre set the 11th best time on his GP2 return following his back injury, while series newcomer Vitaly Petrov unsurprisingly propped up the times in his first ever run in a GP2 car. The Russian DPR driver clocked a best time of 1:27.1.
