Hamilton takes pole and title lead

Lewis Hamilton recorded his first GP2 pole position ahead of this weekend's feature race at Barcelona, and as a result the Briton is now in the championship lead

Hamilton leapt ahead of ART teammate Alex Premat late in the session with a great effort of 1:23.3. Erstwhile points-leader Nelson Piquet Junior set up a thrilling prospect by putting his Piquet Sports car on the front row, while Premat was forced to settle for third.

Last year's winner in the Barcelona feature race Gimmi Bruni will line up fourth in the Trident, while Adam Carroll demonstrated Racing Engineering's improved form with a good run to fifth. Sixth went to impressive German rookie Michael Ammermuller.

Giorgio Pantano's comeback was inauspicious, the Italian recording the slowest time after crashing his car into the barrier on his second flying lap.

Ernesto Viso also spun, causing the session to be briefly halted, while his iSport team had worked wonders to get teammate Tristan Gommendy into the session after a late engine change.
