Glock storms to Barcelona pole

Timo Glock has been the man to beat around Barcelona in a GP2 car this weekend, but he rammed home his advantage in emphatic fashion in qualifying, outpacing the field by almost four tenths of a second

His biggest challenge came, predictably enough, from his iSport teammate Andreas Zuber. And while the Austrian held sway in the early stages, thrice recording times to keep him at the top of the pile, Glock was biding his time.

As the session neared its end, Glock pulled out a 1:27.713 lap to beat Zuber's best.

Third fastest, but not third on the grid, was Giorgio Pantano. The Campos Racing man was too quick under yellows for the stewards' liking this morning, so his five-place grid penalty scuppered his third fastest time, so he'll start eighth.

Even without taking Pantano's penalty into account, Glock's time was nearly eight-tenths faster than the first non-iSport car.

Promoted to best of the rest was ART's Lucas di Grassi, who looked ragged on his way to a 1:28.681 best, just outpacing DAMS' Kazuki Nakajima. But the Japanese will be hit with a 10-place grid penalty for shunting Ho-Pin Tung out of the sprint race in Bahrain, dropping him to 15th.

After the penalties, DAMS teammate Nicolas Lapierre was elevated to fourth from sixth on the grid.

However, he shunted in huge fashion at the high-speed Campsa right-hander, smacking the tyre wall hard with the rear of his car. Fortunately, given his back injury of last year, he walked away from the wreckage.

Behind Lapierre came Mike Conway, who did well to keep his Super Nova entry out of the Turn 3 tyres after an excursion of his own, ahead of Bruno Senna (Arden), Borja Garcia (Durango) and points leader Luca Filippi (Super Nova).

The latter nailed a last-ditch top-10 time on his final lap.
