Carbone: We have turned a corner

Single-seater veteran Fabio Carbone believes his maiden Formula Renault 3.5 victory in Hungary yesterday will kick-start his championship charge and help to reignite his career

The 27-year-old won the F3 Masters at Macau back in 2002 but struggled to graduate from the category. He continued in F3 in Britain, Japan and the Euro Series, and attempted the Renault World Series and Formula Nippon in 2005 and 2007 respectively.

This year he was drafted in for a full season of the World Series with new team Ultimate Signature and, despite a slow start scoring just one point in the first five races, he's now third in the championship at the half way stage.

Runaway leader Giedo van der Garde has a 41-point advantage over second-placed Julien Jousse, and a further 14 over Carbone, but the Brazilian was encouraged by his victory at the Hungaroring and says his championship starts now.

"With this result, I think we've really turned a corner," said Carbone. "We're third in the championship now and our season really starts here.

"I feel that we've got a lot of confidence now, so I'm sure we'll continue to do a good job into the future. There are some exciting times ahead of us."

Carbone finished third in the first race of the weekend at Hungary, before dominating from pole position in yesterday's second race.

"It was an absolute dream for me," he added. "Everything went entirely according the plan and the car felt mighty. It was rock solid under braking and we had just the right compromise between speed and downforce through all the corners.

"This win is a tribute to all the hard work from the entire Ultimate Signature team, which has stopped at nothing to make this possible."
