Spa 2: Van der Merwe doubles up

Alan van der Merwe as good as sealed the British Formula 3 title with his second win of the weekend at Spa Francorchamps. The South African was unflappable under pressure from the rapid, but erratic, Eric Salignon in wet conditions as he led from start to finish

As pole man Robert Doornbos spun his wheels off the line, second-place starter van der Merwe leaped ahead into Eau Rouge. Despite Salignon being able to close the gap on him significantly in the first half of each lap, the Frenchman never got within a second of the race winner.

Jamie Green, the only driver capable of catching van der Merwe in the championship battle, came home third from sixth on the grid after making a good start and dispatching F3 EuroSeries leader Ryan Briscoe for the final podium slot on the inside of La Source on the first lap.

Green is now an almost-insurmountable 73 points in arrears, meaning that van der Merwe is likely to seal the title at Donington Park next weekend.

Doornbos took fifth despite running second to van der Merwe early on the first lap, although he was passed by both Salignon and Green before the second. His fourth place lasted only until halfway round the third lap as Briscoe demoted him.

Danny Watts prevailed in a private battle with Nelson Angelo Piquet to take sixth, with Alvaro Parente leading home Robert Dahlgren and recently-crowned German F3 Cup winner Joao Paulo de Oliveira to round out the top ten.

Ernesto Viso (P1 Motorsport) took scholarship honours from T-Sport team-mates Karun Chandhok and Steven Kane, meaning that the trio head into the final four races of the season separated by just 3.5 points.
