Donington qual 1: VDM again

Alan van der Merwe tightened his grasp on the British Formula 3 championship by claiming pole position for the first of this weekend's two races at Donington Park, while chief title rival Jamie Green could only manage the 11th best time

A close session saw the top 11 cars covered by just half a second, with Carlin ace van der Merwe claiming the top spot from Danny Watts (Hitech) by 0.011s. Rob Austin (Menu) was third fastest.

Fairuz Fauzy (Promatecme) continued his strong run to take fourth, ahead of Robert Dahlgren (Fortec) and Nelson Piquet Jr (Piquest Sport).

Green opted to wait for a window to open in the session before making his run for pole, but lost further time with gear selection problems. He then found that an increase in temperature and a dirty track hampered his attempts to get on terms with his Carlin team-mate.

Ernenso Viso (P1 Motorsport) claimed the scholarship class pole, ahead of the T-Sport duo of Steven Kane and Karun Chandhok.
