Silverstone 2: Kerr reigns
British ace Robbie Kerr dominated the second British Formula 3 race at Silverstone on Sunday to claim his second win of the season and the championship lead while main rival and poleman James Courtney foundered
With Kerr and Courtney alongside on the front row, fireworks were expected, but instead the latter got bogged down and it was Scholarship star Adam Carroll who came through from third on the grid to take the lead into the first corner.
The Ulsterman pulled away ahead of Kerr, Fortec's Heikki Kovalainen and Courtney, who had slipped to fourth. But Carroll's run at the front was short-lived and the Sweeney Racing ace ran wide at Copse allowing Kerr to slip past.
Carroll complained of the car bottoming out as he approached the end of the pit straight, but he had obviously set a precedent as Courtney followed suit by running wide at Copse two laps later and dropped to eighth. The Australian fought back to take fifth at the flag.
Meanwhile, out front, Kerr stretched his legs from Kovalainen, who was aiming to make up for losing second place in the first race due to a gearbox problem. The Finn comfortably held on to second, while race one winner Mark Taylor rounded off a very successful weekend with third place.
Bruce Jouanny made a better start than in race one and managed to convert his seventh on the grid into fourth place, despite heavy pressure from Courtney who closed up towards the end of the race as he took his sixth fastest lap in as many races.
Fabio Carbone was sixth in the second Fortec Dallara-Renault, closely followed by Courtney's team-mate Michael Keohane to give the Carlin squad two drivers in the top seven.
After Carroll ran wide at Copse on the second lap, his problems did not end there and he went straight on at Stowe on the following lap. After a trip across the gravel trap, he rejoined well down the order, but managed to fight back to take fourth in class.
Scholarship victory went to Carroll's team-mate Billy Asaro, which moves the Canadian up into equal second in the drivers' standings with Clivio Piccione, who was second in the race. Stefan Hodgetts took a fantastic third on his debut with Team Park.
