Race 1: Carroll takes thriller

A wet race run to a grid set in dry qualifying made for easily the most exciting race of the British Formula 3 season at Donington Park today (Saturday).

The race got underway on a damp circuit, although there was no actual rain during the event itself. Adam Carroll (P1 Motorsport) leapt into a huge lead of over ten seconds at the start, as a touch of mayhem behind him helped his cause.

Will Power (Alan Docking Racing) got a great start but tangled with Marko Asmer and Lucas di Grassi (both of Hitech Racing) before they even got to Redgate. Hitech had hedged its bets by putting Asmer out on slicks (the only front-runner to do so), but the team's chances were over in a few seconds as all three were out on the spot.

Danilo Dirani (Carlin Motorsport) was briefly second, and Fairuz Fauzy (Menu Motorsport) briefly third, but once the field had settled down it was Carroll leading Danny Watts' Lola-Dome and Nelson Angelo Piquet (Piquet Sports).

The rest of the race was Watts cutting the gap to Carroll and Piquet cutting the gap to Watts. The three were virtually together by the start of the last lap, despite Carroll's huge early advantage. While Carroll just about kept clear of threat, Watts got hit by Piquet at Goddards on the final circuit. Piquet had enough of a lead to restart and get home ahead of Clivio Piccione, but Watts stalled and was left stranded as everyone drove by.

Carroll is now just a point behind Piquet in the championship, though the Northern Irishman starts tomorrow evening's race almost at the back after a disastrous qualifying. Piquet will start that race from second position.
