Knockhill qual 2: Piquet gets first pole
Nelson Angelo Piquet set an astounding lap of 47.366s to record the fastest time of the day at Knockhill and secure pole position for race two tomorrow
The son of triple world champion Nelson Sr only walked around the circuit for the first time on Thursday afternoon but declared that he is used to the bumpy nature of this kind of track from his time racing at home in Brazil. Certainly there was no lack of commitment from Piquet who used all the run-off available to him on the exit of Duffus Dip.
The session was stopped just after halfway when championship leader Alan van der Merwe crashed coming out the chicane and thumped the wall. The South African was okay and admitted making a small mistake.
Jamie Green was on pole at the time of the incident, but with three laps to go Piquet went fastest before cementing pole, his first in Britain, by going even quicker on the following lap. Richard Antinucci also snuck in ahead of Green at the death.
Steven Kane, with the advantage of having only five other cars on the track during his Scholarship qualifying session, was fourth fastest ahead of race one poleman Clivio Piccione. Ernesto Viso took sixth.
