Knockhill race 1: Piccione's first win

Clivio Piccione scored his first British Formula 3 win at Knockhill this morning, leading from start-to-finish having made the most of pole position. The Manor Motorsport driver, from Monaco, scorched away from pole and was never really challenged

While Piccione made a lightening start, Rob Austin's was even better, rocketing up from eighth on the grid to be third by the first corner. The Carlin Motorsport boys were less fortunate, Alan van der Merwe tipping Jamie Green into a spin at Duffus Dip. The South African broke his front wing but the Englishman was out on the spot after being collected by Robert Dahlgren.

Four laps in and Piccione was pulling away when the Safety Car was brought out to clear a tail-end fracas at the hairpin. Comically however, by the time the Safety car was deployed, all the cars involved had restarted! It remained on the circuit for just one lap.

At the restart, Nelson Angelo Piquet who had shadowed Piccione from the start, stayed with the Manor Dallara for a while. But after three laps Piccione broke clear again and that was that.

Richard Antinucci finished third after Austin lost every gear below fourth. Ronnie Bremer ended the race in fourth ahead of Will Davison and van der Merwe, who did well given his distinct lack of front-end downforce. Steven Kane finished seventh winning the Scholarship Class.

"I was agony with my back yesterday," said Piccione. "I twisted some muscles from jumping the kerbs. But it feels better today but probably that's because I've won!"
