Jakes takes pole at Brands

James Jakes has taken pole position on home soil for the first Formula Three Euro Series race at Brands Hatch this weekend

The Manor Motorsport driver was less than one tenth of a second faster than teammate Franck Mailluex, who will share the front row with him on Saturday morning.

The 30-minute session effectively became a seven-minute dash for pole position when the red flags came out, and Jakes was one of the first drivers to set a time in the final rush.

He was in the pits when the session finished, but his time was in little danger as the yellow flags were out at the first corner because Kamui Kobayashi had gone off.

The Japanese driver will start fourth, in between his ASM teammates Romain Grosjean and Nico Hulkenberg.

Former British F3 driver Yelmer Buurman will start sixth on the grid, just ahead of Tim Sandtler.

Championship leader Sebastien Buemi had been fastest in free practice, but he had a difficult session, and could only manage to qualify in eighth position.

Jakes, who made an impressive one-off appearance in this meeting last year, is automatically the favourite for Saturday's race, as overtaking on the short Brands Hatch Indy circuit is almost impossible.
