Hulkenberg takes spectacular win

Nico Hulkenberg charged to a stunning maiden Formula Three Euro Series triumph from 18th on the grid in race two at the Norisring

The ASM driver had retired from the first race after spinning when he was forced off track by teammate Romain Grosjean, but capitalised on early carnage in race two to pass Manor Motorsport's Yelmer Buurman for the lead on lap 23.

Hulkenberg had climbed to tenth by the time the safety car was deployed on lap two to clear up a pile-up in the first hairpin which was caused when Renger van der Zande crashed into Grosjean.

When the safety car was again deployed after Edoardo Mortara (Signature-Plus) hit third-placed Kamui Kobayashi (ASM) at the same corner on lap seven, Hulkenberg was up to sixth.

The key point in the race came on lap 14, when third-placed Sebastien Buemi (Mucke Motorsport) spun James Jakes (Manor Motorsport) at the final corner.

This gave Hulkenberg a run on Buemi, and he made the move stick into Turn 1. Soon, Hulkenberg had outbraked Buurman on the outside of Turn 1 and he went on to win by 6.6 seconds from Buemi, who passed Buurman on the inside of the final corner on the same lap.

Tom Dillmann (ASM) claimed second after slipping past Buurman at the final corner on lap 36, with Jakes passing Michael Patrizi (Prema Powerteam) late in the race to take fifth.

Filip Salaquarda had finished fifth on the road, but was excluded as he was meant to start at the back of the grid after ignoring a black and orange flag in race one.
