Engel wins race one at Monza
Maro Engel made no mistake in converting pole position to a win in this morning's first British Formula Three race at Monza
The Carlin Motorsport driver led the race from start to finish, but it was a typical Monza thriller behind him.
The German, driving for Carlin Motorsport, withstood heavy pressure from Stephen Jelley (Double R) and Marko Asmer (Hitech Racing) early on, but when the latter pair's battle with each other got a little too fraught on lap three, Engel was able to get a break he wouldn't lose.
On lap four both Jelley and Asmer had spins at the first corner, both dropping down the order. Asmer only fell to sixth, however, while Jelley's race was totally ruined. Their problems allowed Sam Bird (Carlin) to settle into second, ahead of team-mate Alberto Valerio. From then on the top three ran steadily to the flag to complete Carlin's second podium sweep of the year.
Asmer, despite a broken wing, fought back past Esteban Guerrieri (Ultimate Motorsport) and Jonathan Kennard (Double R) to take a well-earned fourth, limiting the impression Bird will make on his championship lead.
Sergio Perez (T-Sport) quickly passed rival and early leader Franky Cheng (Performance Racing) to take a National Class lead he would never relinquish.
