Button takes early advantage

British teenager Jenson Button has drawn first blood in the battle for the Autosport British Formula 3 Championship race supporting the Grand Prix at Silverstone

Button's Promatecme Dallara-Renault came out on top of an exciting battle today against Brazilian Luciano Burti, in which the two were covered by just 0.06seconds.

But no one is expecting these times to count for the grid. The circuit today was extremely slippery, and everyone believes that times in tomorrow's session - after the Formula 1 cars have practised - will be considerably quicker.

'The circuit's very strange today,' acknowledged Button. 'It's very slippery, but the car seems to be working very well in these conditions. My first lap out of the pits was pole position and there's more to come.'

Burti was one of many to slide momentarily off the road at the ultra-quick Copse Corner, but his Stewart Racing Dallara-Mugen Honda still took a front row spot.

Third is Marc Hynes, whose Manor Motorsport Dallara's power-shift gear facility stopped working. He shares the second row with Indian Narain Karthikeyan, who was stuck in the Copse gravel after an off.

Kristian Kolby and Aluizio Coelho complete the top six.
