Masters of Formula 3: Joel Eriksson leads all-Motopark podium
Joel Eriksson dominated the Masters of Formula 3 with a faultless drive at Zandvoort to lead home team-mates Niko Kari and Sergio Sette Camara in a Motopark 1-2-3
Eriksson converted his pole position, earned through winning Saturday's qualification race, into the lead heading into Tarzan for the first time.
As Eriksson defended from fellow front row starter Callum Ilott, Kari made a bold move around the outside, passing Ilott and almost grabbing the lead.
He ran out of road, though, and had to slot in behind Eriksson, who then stormed away to build up his lead.
"It was not so hard," said Eriksson. "I knew it was all about the start and that was pretty close with Niko but after that I pushed to get a gap and then slowed to look after the tyres.
"Every time I saw Niko get closer, I pushed a bit more so I was managing the gap all the time."
Kari tried hard to bring down the gap, narrowing it by a couple of tenths mid-race and then again on the final lap, but Eriksson always looked in control, while Kari in turn was clear of Sette Camara as the Dallara-Volkswagens dominated.
Camara earned third place with a brave move around the outside of Ilott at Tarzan on lap two, but the Brit never gave up and continued to chase hard, although he was never able to mount a serious bid for the place on a track at which overtaking is tough.
Alex Albon took fifth in the better of the Hitech GP Dallara-Mercedes, latching on to the back of Ilott on the last lap, while Pedro Piquet fended off an early challenge from Van Amersfoort team-mate Anthoine Hubert to secure sixth place.
Sam MacLeod pushed hard to go from 14th to ninth for Fortec by blasting past David Beckmann's Mucke Motorsport car at Tarzan.
Fastest lap went to Motopark's Guan Yu Zhou, who pitted on lap 17 for new tyres but finished in last place as a result of the pitstop.
