David Zhu set for British F3 debut as West-Tec trims Spa entry

Team West-Tec is likely to reduce its entry to two cars for the next round of the British Formula 3 International Series at Spa, with ex-Formula 2 racer David Zhu making his series debut

The team, which entered seven cars for the Silverstone opener, has made the move because the Belgian event, which takes place on July 25-27, comes before the European F3 Open round at the same track on September 8-9.

It is understood that European F3 Open organisers are concerned that West-Tec's drivers would gain an advantage over the opposition by contesting the British F3 weekend.

Ed Jones, who leads the British F3 National Class after taking all three wins at Silverstone, was only confirmed for the first round.

The move means that Briton Cameron Twynham, Venezuelan Roberto la Rocca and China's Huan Zhu, who had each intended to contest all four British F3 rounds, will sit out Spa.

New Zealander Chris Vlok is only signed up for British F3, so there are no concerns over his participation at Spa, while David Zhu will replace his younger brother.

Zhu Sr, 22, finished 11th in the Formula 2 rankings last year with a best result of fifth in his first season racing outside Asia.

West-Tec team principal John Miller said: "We'll be unplugging one Zhu and replacing him with another!"

West-Tec's reduced entry for Spa does not cause too many concerns for British F3 organisers, who are expecting an extra contingent of FIA F3 European Championship racers for the event.
