Williams to test Toyota engine next month

Williams are planning to test for the first time with Toyota engines next month, the team have revealed

Technical talks between Williams and the Japanese car manufacturer have been ongoing since the start of the season to give them a head start in their new deal, although the new partnership was only confirmed ahead of last week's German Grand Prix.

And in a bid to make sure Williams get as much knowledge as possible of Toyota's products, they will run an interim car in the next few weeks.

"We are running our new engine in September, as early as that," said team boss Frank Williams at the Hungarian Grand Prix. "That is when we start. It (the Toyota) is a very proven unit. Cooperation has begun behind the scenes obviously."

Williams believes there will be few problems in changing engine manufacturer, judging by the experience of the move to Cosworth at the start of this year.

"Moving to Cosworth, while it wasn't seamless, it wasn't a cock up in any way," he explained.

"We had some problems with our car in terms of transmission, but they had fewer problems than we had. I don't remind myself of any major difficulties in communication or technically, except on our side I think."

And despite ending their relationship with Cosworth at the end of the year, Williams is confident that there will be no trail off in their development programme for the rest of the season.

"Well, you are dealing with a company that exists by success in racing - Cosworth," he said. "And the same comment can apply to us.

"It is not in our nature to lose interest in the last four or five races. We are desperate for points, desperate."
