Williams are expected to make a decision tomorrow whether to replace Ralf Schumacher for the upcoming French Grand Prix, with the German appearing likely to sit out at least one race following his crash at the United States Grand Prix ten days ago.
Schumacher lost control of his car on the final corner of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and hit the wall at high speed, his car coming to a stop on the start/finish straight. The German remained seated in the car for more than 15 minutes, before he was evacuated by ambulance to a nearby hospital.
While initial reports suggested he escaped injuries, it appears Schumacher still suffers from bruising and a mild concussion. The team are awaiting a decision from the driver, following consultation with the FIA's medical delegate Prof. Sid Watkins, on Ralf's condition but have already put Marc Gene on alert to replace the German.
Gene, Williams's reserve driver, is contracted to replace one of the Williams racing drivers should they be unable to participate in a Grand Prix. Last year, he replaced Ralf Schumacher at the Italian Grand Prix in Monza, after the German crashed in testing a week before. Gene finished the race in fifth place.
The Spaniard was also called into testing last week at Jerez, and his programme included race simulation, qualifying laps, pitstop practice, and other activities that would prepare him to take part in a Grand Prix. He also set faster times compared to his testing teammate, Antonio Pizzonia, throughout the three-day session.
Williams would not confirm the replacement but said an announcement is imminent.
