Ralf Schumacher sent out a warning to McLaren and Ferrari insisting that there is more to come from his Williams package, after a disappointing opening free practice at Indianapolis.
"There's more to come tomorrow," said Schumacher, who could only post the ninth best time of the day. "We tried different things, so we shouldn't look too closely at today's rankings. There are changes to come.
"Generally, we are very competitive with no problems on the technical side. We found which tire compound to take and the rest of the work with settings has to be done tomorrow."
Schumacher claimed his Michelin tyres were not working well on a cold day in Indianapolis, and he also criticised the track for a lack of adhesion. "It was nearly the same as the first day last year," he said. "There was no grip in the infield and we need to get a lot more rubber there."
For Montoya, Indianapolis was a new experience. He won the oval race at the circuit last year, but was only moderately impressed with what he experienced on the road-course layout this time around.
"I think there are too many slow corners to the track," said the Colombian, "but it's about what I thought it would be."
He added: "It's been quite a difficult day for us. We're struggling a bit with the balance of the car, but it's fun to be here. We'll work on it, and I think we can make it much better."
