Weekend review and results round-up
Sebastian Vettel's home grand prix marked the first time all season that the world champion had finished off the podium, as he was relegated to fourth behind a superb battle between Lewis Hamilton, Fernando Alonso and Mark Webber
McLaren's victory and Ferrari's second place left the so-often-dominant Red Bull drivers admitting that their team had problems to solve, but no one was getting too excited about the prospect of a title battle erupting, as Vettel's championship cushion remained at 77 points.
The weekend had started with a surprise announcement as Jarno Trulli vacated his Lotus seat in favour of Karun Chandhok for one weekend only. Trulli's erstwhile Toyota team-mate Timo Glock is staying put with his current underdog employer, though - the German announcing that he was committing to Virgin through to the end of 2014.
Elsewhere, Casey Stoner overcame a battered Jorge Lorenzo to win MotoGP's United States Grand Prix, after the reigning champion had shrugged off a huge practice crash to take pole.
Will Power got his IndyCar title bid back on track by winning at Edmonton, while the Formula 1 feeder series bore the brunt of the changeable weather at the Nurburgring, with Romain Grosjean pouncing when Jules Bianchi slipped up in the second GP2 race, after Luca Filippi had won the feature race in his 100th GP2 start and his first outing back with Coloni.
