Weber backs Ferrari's 2002 plan
Michael Schumacher's manager, Willi Weber, believes that Ferrari is right to consider starting next season with this year's car
Ferrari is planning to introduce a radical new gearbox and engine installation on its new car. They will be cast in a single titanium block, which could prove a reliability risk if the parts cannot be thoroughly tested before the Australian Grand Prix on March 3.
"It's right that Ferrari might start the season with last year's car, but it's good like this," said Weber. "Something new should be thoroughly tested, and because of the ban on testing in November and December, they can't do that.
"Time is therefore very short. If the equipment is not 100 percent right, then no points should be placed at risk, and Ferrari will start with the old car, which was outstandingly good."
The new car will not be launched until February 1, which gives the team less than a month to prepare it for racing.
Schumacher is currently on holiday in Mauritius with his family, but will return to Europe in time for the FIA awards night in December when he will receive his trophy for winning the 2001 world championship.
