Webber to spurn Toyota
Mark Webber is set to turn down Toyota's multi-million pound offer to drive with the squad next year and will instead accept a drive with Williams in the hope he'll be on the top step of the podium sooner
Toyota have come up with a last minute pay offer to lure the Australian, which would make him one of the highest paid drivers on the grid. But Webber is likely to reject the offer of money and instead sign for a team that will produce a winning car.
"I would love to go on and do business with Jaguar but time is running out," he said. "I have never been closer to a team and it will break my heart to leave. I have to start bashing out podiums next year. I'm not interested in the money, I am interested in being there. I have a lot more to prove. I know I have driven really well in a lot of races without getting anything for it.
"But I have to do the business next year, build all over again because I will have to learn a lot as I should be racing at the front. I will be disappointed if I ended my career and couldn't say I had a crack at the World Championship."
Webber has refused to publicly confirm he will join the Grove-based team, but final details are expected to be completed at this weekend's British Grand Prix with an announcement is likely at the Hungarian Grand Prix.
It is not impossible that Webber could actually drive for Williams before the end of the season. The team may decide to buy Webber out of his Jaguar contract early to replace the injured Ralf Schumacher, who is not expected to race for the rest of the season. The only problem is that Webber will not be able to test the FW26 from now until then which could make the switich unlikely.
