Webber: Fifth Place No Deception

Jaguar's Mark Webber says his performance in today's qualifying for the San Marino Grand Prix was not down to a low fuel load.

Jaguar's Mark Webber says his performance in today's qualifying for the San Marino Grand Prix was not down to a low fuel load.

Australian Webber, third on the grid for Jaguar in the last race in Brazil, shone once more with another stand-out performance as the quickest qualifier from outside last season's top two teams, finishing behind the two Ferrari and Williams drivers.

The Jaguar driver, impressive all weekend, said his result was the reflection of the actual pace, and denied he was running with little fuel on board.

"I was aiming for a top six position and it's great to have managed P5 on the grid for tomorrow," said Webber. "In some ways, the lap was quite conservative. I didn't want to make any silly mistakes or over push the car. "Today, we got it just right and we are now very well placed for tomorrow's race.

"I suspect there will be the odd cynical remark about whether we are running light fuel but as we correctly pointed out in Brazil, just wait and watch the race tomorrow. We are on a healthy fuel strategy and there is no deception at work here."

Webber finished ten positions ahead of Brazilian teammate Antonio Pizzonia, who was almost two seconds off the pace of pole position.
