Watson: 'Irv's talking too much'
Former grand prix driver John Watson thinks that Eddie Irvine's criticism of Jaguar's revised R3 could spell the end of the Ulsterman's F1 career
Irvine admitted that if was unimpressed with the car during its first run at Barcelona last week, and Watson, who now works as a commentator on Sky's F1 Digital + channel, reckons that in an increasingly commercialised F1 environment there is little room for such maverick behaviour.
"His future is obviously a matter for him and Jaguar to discuss, but it doesn't look good for him at the present you have to say," commented Watson. "He's not helped by his outspokenness either. Because in a world where bland is the most obvious colour, who's going to pick up on a driver as outspoken as he is?"
Watson also criticised Irvine for his views on the Silverstone circuit.
"When you hear Eddie making comments like we should go back to racing at Brands Hatch instead of Silverstone it makes him sound like an old retired racing driver. I just wonder if he's seen Brands recently. It's fine as a national racing circuit, but there's no way that it could hope to stage a modern day grand prix."
