British Racing Drivers' Club president Jackie Stewart has urged the Competitions Commission to come to a "prompt" conclusion over their investigation into a deal between the BRDC and Octagon Motorsports which was concluded last year.
Stewart is concerned that the investigation will cast doubts over the credibility of the British Grand Prix.
"We are surprised by the referral," said Stewart, who has worked tirelessly to ensure the future of the British Grand Prix.
"It is a complication that, we believe, needs to be dealt with promptly to remove any doubt about this country's commitment to a sport and industry that together represent one of our greatest achievements."
The investigation was referred to the commission by the British government after the BRDC, which owns the Silverstone circuit, signed a deal last December with Octagon, which holds the rights to promote the British Grand Prix for 15 years.
The deal secured the future of the British Grand Prix as the two parties confirmed that the race will continue to be held at Silverstone from 2002.
However, the $60 million (dollars) deal is reported to now be in jeopardy and the commission aims to conclude if it is fair by August 6.
