Stewart tells Eddie to get his act together

The triple world champion believes Irvine should be doing more to justify his £18 million three-year salary. He said the Ulsterman slid off as many times at the last race in Canada as he used to do in an entire season.

Irvine scored Jaguar's first - and only - points when he finished fourth at Monaco a month ago, but then suffered what he admitted was his worst race in Canada a fortnight ago.

"Eddie's got to focus more," said Stewart. "He's got to spend more time on the job than he does right now.

"He came out of a very successful season with Ferrari. He chose to come to us - he approached us - and I think he's got the makings of a driver who can win more motor races."

Stewart highlighted Irvine's performance in Canada where he finished 13th.

"Eddie had a bad weekend in Canada," he said. "He had a bad Friday and on Saturday and Sunday he went off the road about five or six times. That might be more than in an entire season for somebody like me.

"I think we've got things we have to do to make ourselves more competitive but so must our drivers. It was the same wetness for everybody but they didn't all go off the road in Canada. At the present time it's not always the car. We had a good race in Monaco and a bad Canadian Grand Prix. We've got to get a better finishing record. It's neither the one thing nor the other and everybody has got to take responsibility for that."
