Stat Attack: Europe

Michele Merlino interrogates the record books and compiles the vital statistics ahead of the Canadian Grand Prix - the seventh round of the 2011 Formula 1 world championship

Europe personal scorecard

• Sebastian Vettel won last year's European Grand Prix in comfortable fashion from pole position, but in 2009 he was not so lucky. He was force to make an extra pitstop after the fuel flow problem at the first time of asking, the problem contributing to a later engine failure. He hit the headlines in 2008, however, when he took his Toro Rosso to a 1m37.842s lap in qualifying, which was to stand as the outright track record for two years. His 1m37.587s lap in qualifying last year beat it.

• Mark Webber has never scored a point at Valencia, and last year endured a hair-raising barrell-roll while attempting to correct that statistic against the back of Heikki Kovalainen's Lotus. He has previously been on the European Grand Prix podium, but that result - in 2007 - came at the Nurburgring.

• Lewis Hamilton has never qualified outside the top three at Valencia, and has finished as the runner-up on three separate occasions. His races have never been without drama; neck spasms and an illness blighting his 2008 performance, an incorrect pit call in 2009 costing him the race and a penalty coming his way last year after overtaking the safety car.

• Jenson Button made it to the podium at Valencia last year, despite starting from seventh. That made up for an abject result in his world title-winning season when he finished seventh after starting fifth.

• Surprisingly Fernando Alonso has never finished higher than sixth at Valencia - that result coming in 2009 with Renault. He would have been higher last year had his race not been spoiled by the safety car. He has, however, won the European Grand Prix twice, both his 2005 and 2007 successes coming at the Nurburgring.

• Felipe Massa won Valencia's inaugural grand prix in 2008, but missed the following year's race as he was recovering from his Hungaroring accident. Last year he - like Alonso - was trapped behind the safety car and wound up 11th.

• Michael Schumacher has scored six wins and three poles from the 13 European Grands Prix he has contested, although none of those successes have come at Valencia. Last year the Spanish circuit was the scene for his worst qualifying performance of 15th, and he finished there too, although he did set the second fastest race lap.

• Nico Rosberg has scored points at Valencia for the last three years, his worst result being a 10th place with Mercedes last year.

• Nick Heidfeld has never scored a point at Valencia and was outqualified by his team-mate Robert Kubica two years out of two during their time together at BMW Sauber.

• Vitaly Petrov finished 14th last year after starting 10th, but was more successful in GP2, winning three of the six races he contested at the circuit - each one a feature race.

• With the exception of 2008 - during which year he drove a dismal Honda - Rubens Barrichello has always gone well at Valencia. In 2009 he won from third on the grid for Brawn and added an excellent fourth place for Williams last year after starting ninth.

• Pastor Maldonado won last year's GP2 feature race at Valencia and scored points four times from his six starts in the series. He finished second behind Petrov on his first appearance in the category at the circuit in 2008.

• Adrian Sutil finished sixth at Valencia last year after starting 13th, and it remains his only points finish at the European Grand Prix. He has never qualified inside the top 10.

Kobayashi ran long last year to good effect © LAT

• Paul di Resta ran as a Friday test driver for Force India last year at Valencia, ending up 16th in the opening practice session.

• Kamui Kobayashi was seventh last year by running an unusual strategy. His last stop came just five laps from the end, but he used his fresh rubber to overtake several cars - including Alonso's Ferrari.

• Sergio Perez finished on the podium in both GP2 races in 2009, but could only manage 11th in the feature race last year from pole position after contact with Davide Valsecchi.

• Sebastien Buemi finished ninth last year, but has never qualified in the top 10 at Valencia.

• Jaime Alguersuari has never even been close to making the top 10 in either qualifying or racing at Valencia.

• Heikki Kovalainen was always beaten by his team-mate in qualifying at Valencia. He finished fourth twice during his McLaren years, but last year was hit by Webber, making it the only occasion on which he has not scored points in a European Grand Prix.

• Jarno Trulli was fifth in the 2008 race, but has not got near the top 10 during the past two seasons.

• Vitantonio Liuzzi has only competed at Valencia once in F1 - last year - and finished 16th.

• Timo Glock finished seventh at Valencia for Toyota in 2008 and set the fastest lap the following year on his way to 14th. He has never qualified inside the top 10 at the street circuit.

• Jerome d'Ambrosio scored one podium finish from his six GP2 starts at Valencia, that coming in the 2008 sprint race.

Europe teams' scorecard

• Prior to Vettel's win from pole last year, Red Bull had never been on the front row or the podium at Valencia.

• McLaren's best results at Valencia are Hamilton's trio of second places.

Massa won for Ferrari in 2008 © LAT

• Ferrari won the first European Grand Prix to be held at Valencia in 2008 courtesy of Massa, but has never been on the front row or the podium since.

• Mercedes had a disastrous race last year, only scoring one point and having neither car in the top 10 on the grid.

• Renault has had a car in the top 10 on the grid and in the race for the past two years (Alonso in 2009 and Kubica last year).

• Williams has never failed to score at Valencia and came close to the podium last year with Barrichello in fourth.

• Sauber took a podium finish (as BMW Sauber) with Kubica in 2008, and has never failed to score at Valencia.

• Toro Rosso has scored points on two of its three starts at Valencia, Vettel's sixth place in 2008 being its best result.
