Jarno fastest at last

Jarno Trulli posted his first ever fastest lap in a race, at the 203rd attempt. Up until Bahrain, he held the record as the driver with the most starts without a fastest lap. That now falls to Johnny Herbert with 160, ahead of Martin Brundle (158) and Olivier Panis (157).

It was also the second fastest lap for the Toyota team, following Ralf Schumacher's first in Belgium in 2005.

Toyota's qualifying success

Toyota locked out the front row for the first time in its history, and claimed its first pole position since the 2005 Japanese Grand Prix (Ralf Schumacher). It was also Trulli's first pole since the US GP in 2005 and the fourth of his career - bringing him level with Mike Hawthorn and Didier Pironi in the all-time list.

It was also the first front row start for Timo Glock and Toyota's best combined qualifying performance, improving on its previous best a week earlier in Malaysia.

Qualifying notes

• BMW-Sauber failed to start one car in the top 10 in two consecutive races for the first time since its debut season as a team, in the 2006 French and German Grands Prix.
• Sebastien Bourdais posted the worst grid slot of his F1 career in 20th.
Mark Webber's 19th place equalled his worst performance, the previous occasion being the 2007 Spanish Grand Prix.
• Adrian Sutil, meanwhile, equally the best result of his career in 16th, the previous occasions being Canada 2008 and Australia 2009.
• Sebastian Vettel qualified in the top five in back-to-back races for the first time in his career. It would have been three races in a row without the 10-place penalty that dropped him from third to 13th in Malaysia.
• Lewis Hamilton equalled his longest streak of races with a front row start, five, set from the 2008 Malaysian to Monaco GPs. His last front row start was China 2008.
• Felipe Massa is just one behind Hamilton at four consecutive races without a front row start, the first time for him since the 2006 Malaysian to Canadian GPs.

Race notes

• For the first time in his career, Jenson Button has finished on the podium in four consecutive races.
• Red Bull scored back-to-back podiums for the first time.
For the first time in its history as a team, BMW-Sauber has had two races in a row without scoring a point. Its last points finish was the second place for Nick Heidfeld at Sepang.
• Kimi Raikkonen scored points for Ferrari and avoided the team posting its worst ever start to a season.
• Brawn has scored 50 points in its first four races. Despite having only half points awarded in Malaysia, it is still only the fourth time in the last 10 years that a team has acheived the feat. The others were McLaren in 2003 (51), Ferrari in 2004 (64) and Renault in 2006 (51).
• A Ferrari led a race for the first time this season when Kimi Raikkonen hit the front before his first pitstop on laps 20 and 21.
• Jarno Trulli is the first polesitter of the season not to go on and win the race.
