Spanish GP qualifying - Hakkinen on pole

Mika Hakkinen continued his astonishing run of qualifying sessions in Spain today. The Finn had been only fifth quickest until five minutes from the end but once again he pulled a quick lap out of the bag and pipped Eddie Irvine to pole position. Irvine outqualified his team-mate Schumacher for the first time this season and will start on the front row alongside Hakkinen.

Schumacher looked a little deflated with his fourth sport on the grid, he has Coulthard ahead of him but Ferrari must be pleased with the result all the same. Barcelona was the one track in particular that they expected to be some way behind the McLarens.

The star of the day was Jean Alesi who held pole position for most of the session. He found incredible speed in his Sauber but was demoted to fifth by the end of the hour, impressive all the same.
