Schumacher wins Malaysian GP

The result clinches the constructors' title for Ferrari ahead of McLaren.

"We wanted to win today and we did it," said Schumacher wearing a celebratory red wig. "We won the drivers and the constructors championship. We could have done it with three points but we did it in style with a win, the way we wanted to and, to be honest, that is what we deserved.

"It's the ideal result and we can now go on a very nice winter holiday we all deserve for working flat out all year."

Schumacher rescued a victory despite slipping to third at the first bend behind the two McLarens.

"I didn't make a very good start and didn't get off the line well enough but I didn't know Mika had been hit with a penalty at that stage," he said.

"Early in the race I was concerned as David pulled away. I was pushing hard but I couldn't catch him. I was hoping he would come in early which he did and that gave us the chance, but he was faster than me at that stage.

"He put pressure on me right at the end," the 2000 World Champion continued, "but there was pressure throughout the race.

"We will celebrate in big way tonight."

Mika Hakkinen finished fourth having been given a 10 second stop-and-go penalty for a jump start, the Finn fighting back from 19th place into the points.

Jacques Villeneuve finished fifth for BAR , but it wasn't enough to move the team ahead of Benetton for fourth place in the constructors, while Eddie Irvine took the final point for Jaguar.

Johnny Herbert's F1 career ended with a nasty accident in the closing stages when a failure in the rear of his Jaguar sent him hard into the barriers at high speed. Herbert was lifted from the car and taken to the medical centre for a precautionary x-ray to his left leg. It is reported that there is no break, just heavy bruising.
