Schumacher Determined to Clinch Record Win

World Champion Michael Schumacher cast away thoughts of taking a cautious approach to Sunday's Hungarian Grand Prix after qualifying on pole alongside teammate Rubens Barrichello.

World Champion Michael Schumacher cast away thoughts of taking a cautious approach to Sunday's Hungarian Grand Prix after qualifying on pole alongside teammate Rubens Barrichello.

The pair could clinch the sixth consecutive Constructors' Championship for Ferrari at the Hungaroring if their closest rivals Renault fail to score ten points more than them on Sunday.

But Schumacher insisted he will be fighting to secure his own unique achievement - a record-breaking 12th victory of the season - rather than taking it easy to put an early finish to the title race.

"I don't think it's a secret that it is very unlikely to take that title away from us so it is just an open race where we enjoy ourselves and go flat out," said German Schumacher. "I guess (the grid) is what you should have expected with the exception of the McLarens, who I expected to be a little faster. But in general you have to expect the BARs to be quick and the Renaults to be quick."

Cool temperatures helped the Ferrari pair finish half a second faster than their closest rival - BAR-Honda driver Takuma Sato - while Renault pair Fernando Alonso and Jarno Trulli finished fifth and ninth respectively.

This time last year Ferrari had a torrid time in Hungary, one of their worst races of the year, as Schumacher and Barrichello managed only fifth and eighth on the grid.

"Compared to last year it's significantly better - we obviously worked very hard for that result and we all gave a big push during the last testing session," added Schumacher.

"Particularly in Jerez where it was very hot and we did great preparation there for both Hockenheim and for Hungary, and this is the result. That's why we are there and it's been just a great effort from everyone.

"I guess (temperature) do make a difference but I am not sure in which way because usually we have not struggled towards the lower temperatures, it's just difficult at the other temperatures.

"But I think we have seen at Hockenheim and recent races before that we have improved in general. But anyway, Bridgestone have given a big push and in this respect we just picked up the performance and look good now."
