Mika Hakkinen demonstrated his intent to get back into Championship contention, when he topped the times in Saturday's free practice for the Monaco Grand Prix.
The McLaren driver had failed to post a competitive time in the first session, after Jos Verstappen's Arrows had leaked oil onto the circuit, but he produced a scintillating lap in the second session to go quicker than the 2000 qualifying time.
Hakkinen headed the Schumacher brothers, with Ferrari's Michael second quickest, ahead of his brother Ralf. David Coulthard was fourth fastest, marginally quicker than Jaguar's Eddie Irvine.
Rubens Barrichello could only manage the eighth quickest time, while Prost veteran Jean Alesi kept his impressive form going with the ninth fastest time. His teammate Luciano Burti, however, was at the bottom of the timesheets, having a hard time following his crash in the end of the first practice session.
Benetton's Giancarlo Fisichella and Arrows driver Enrique Bernoldi both crashed into the barriers at Rascasse during the session but were unhurt in the incidents.
