Italian Jarno Trulli continued to put in strong times for Renault as he claimed fifth fastest time ahead of Japanese BAR-Honda driver Takuma Sato in sixth and his own Spanish teammate Fernando Alonso in seventh.

Colombian Juan Pablo Montoya finished eighth in the second Williams while compatriot Ricardo Zonta, making his race debut for Toyota this weekend, claimed ninth and Finn Kimi Raikkonen closed out the top ten in his McLaren-Mercedes.

Brazilian Felipe Massa came to a halt at turn three 26 minutes into the session with a smoking Sauber but Italian Giorgio Pantano was the only other driver to experience an incident when he went off briefly at turn 11.
