Japan's Takuma Sato was ecstatic after scoring first Formula One podium at today's United States Grand Prix.
"This is an incredible feeling," admitted Sato, who finished in third place with his BAR-Honda, behind the winning Ferraris of Michael Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello. "A result we have worked hard for and pushed so hard to achieve for so long.
"I feel very proud for the team, Honda and all the partners. They have been pushing so hard to try to resolve the problems I have been experiencing. I had a strong race and the car just felt beautiful. It was so consistent so I have to thank Michelin for all their efforts too."
Sato's podium was not only his first but also equalled the best finish by a Japanese driver, Aguri Suzuki's third place for Lola in his home race 14 years ago. It also ended a run of retirements due to blown engines.
"The last few races have been very tough for the team with the back-to-backs and our problems, so I'm absolutely thrilled to have this way of thanking everyone," he added.
Sato's teammate Jenson Button retired from the race with a mechanical problem.
"The car was working well and was very stable, especially under braking," said Button. "The traction was exceptional, so it was disappointing that we were not able to finish the race because I think that it could have been a very interesting result."
