Sato scores first GP podium

Takuma Sato recorded his first-ever podium finish in Formula 1 when he placed third in Sunday's United States Grand Prix at Indianapolis

Despite the fact BAR missed an opportunity to pit Sato at the beginning of a Safety Car period, the Japanese driver fought back in sensational style.

"It means a lot to me, not only for me, but also the team," said Sato. "It's a very, very important result today for us. This is an incredible feeling."

After losing a position to Fernando Alonso's Renault at the start, Sato survived two near-misses - one when passing Olivier Panis's Toyota and another when grabbing third from Jarno Trulli's Renault.

"I was a little surprised by what happened at the start and then losing my position to Alonso," said Sato. "Then the very concerning circumstances on track made things very confusing. After the two Safety Cars I felt I had the car to fight to get my position back.

"I had a good battle with a few drivers, then later in the race saw Jarno hesitate on the oil flag so I took my opportunity. The last few races have been very tough for the team with the back-to-backs and our problems, so I'm absolutely thrilled to have this way of thanking everyone."
