Salo Glad to be Back on the F1 Grid

Toyota driver Mika Salo is glad to be back on the Formula One grid this year in Australia after missing last year's Grands Prix.

Toyota driver Mika Salo is glad to be back on the Formula One grid this year in Australia after missing last year's Grands Prix.

The 35-year old Finn decided to take a year off from racing in 2001 in order to carry out an intensive testing programme for the Japanese squad, who will make their Formula One debut at the Australian Grand Prix next Sunday in Melbourne.

Salo, who has taken part in 94 Grands Prix, says he is happy to be back on the grid this season, but has set low goals for the Melbourne race and is just aiming to see the chequered flag.

"I came to this race last year as a spectator and I didn't enjoy it too much," admitted Salo. "I hated seeing the other drivers out on the track and not being able to join them. Well, this year I can. This weekend will be a mega exciting moment for everyone at Toyota because, ever since I signed for Toyota in August 2000, this is what we have been working towards.

"Testing has gone quite well for us, but we will only know where we are after qualifying on Saturday. I've finished in the top six (on the track) every time I've raced at Albert Park, but I think it's a bit unrealistic to think we'll do that this time. Our aim must be just to finish."
