Salo Downbeat after Troubled Race

Finn Mika Salo was 'extremely disappointed' after failing to finish the Canadian Grand Prix for his Toyota team on Sunday.

Finn Mika Salo was 'extremely disappointed' after failing to finish the Canadian Grand Prix for his Toyota team on Sunday.

The Japanese squad had not shined in Saturday's qualifying session, with Salo setting the 18th quickest time while teammate Allan McNish was down in 20th place. But both drivers found their cars were much more competitive in today's race, quickly moving up the field.

However, Salo endured a troubled race, having to pit earlier than planned due to a damaged rear wheel. He then was penalised for speeding in the pitlane, and eventually retired on lap 42.

"Things were going really well and the car was feeling the best it has all weekend," said Salo. "I was overtaking a lot of cars but I had to stop early to change what I thought was a punctured rear tyre. In fact, the front tyre was damaged by something on the track, so I had to come in again.

"Then I got a drive through penalty for speeding in the pitlane. It was already over by that point, but brake trouble - probably caused by the puncture - ended the race for me. I am extremely disappointed."

McNish also failed to finish after he spun off on lap 46.
