Double retirement blow for Toyota

Toyota's disappointing qualifying performance that saw Mika Salo and Alan McNish line up 18th and 20th respectively was followed by both cars retiring within four laps of each other from the Canadian GP

Salo had made progress on a light fuel load early in the race, moving from 18th to 11th in the early stages, and looked set for a top 10 finish before brake problems forced him out.

"Things were going really well and the car was feeling the best it has all weekend," said the Finn. "I was overtaking a lot of cars but I had to stop early to change what I thought was a punctured rear tyre. In fact, the front tyre was damaged by something on the track, so I had to come in again. Then I got a drive-through penalty for speeding in the pit lane.

"It was already over by that point, but brake trouble - probably caused by the puncture - ended the race for me. I am extremely disappointed."

Team-mate McNish fared worse, struggling to make up places early on after a collision with Pedro de la Rosa's Jaguar at the end of lap one. His race ended on lap 45 after he spun on the exit of Turn Nine.

"I had contact with de la Rosa at the start, which damaged the set up of the car, making it difficult to drive," said the former Le Mans winner. "The paddles on my steering wheel would not work during my scheduled stop, so I lost time there.

"It has not been a good weekend and I am hoping for better things in Germany."

Toyota F1 president Ove Andersson echoed his driver's sentiments. "A double retirement is not what we wanted, but this is racing. It was our first trip to Montreal and we have learned a lot."
