Olivier Panis Q&A
Although Formula 1 is slipping into hibernation while it waits for the winter testing ban to pass, drivers can't seem to stay away from the race track. While world champion Michael Schumacher gears up for a return to karting at the end of the week, BAR ace Olivier Panis was at Brands Hatch last weekend to cheer along his F1 engineer David Lloyd, who was racing in the Formula Ford Festival. Autosport.com caught up with the Frenchman to see what he made of it all
"I'm really happy to be here because my engineer is racing this weekend and I'm here to support him. I know he liked driving in Formula Fords when he was younger and he is going well. I'm really happy that he qualified for the semi-finals on the second day. Everybody has done a good job, but the team are also here for a bit of fun so there is less pressure for us."
"To be honest, no. I was on a promotion yesterday, but they worked hard and today I have just spoken with the team to make sure that everything is fine, but they have been already doing a good job. I wanted to help him if I had more time, but unfortunately I have not had the time to be here."
"It is really different compared to during the season. It is quite good to see the young people racing because I know this event is very important for young drivers coming up in their career. It's a very strong race, and it is good to see the young drivers fighting each other for the trophy. For me, it's my first time at Brands Hatch - I've never been here before - and it has been good fun."
"Not really, because I started in Formula Renault, I never drove in Formula Ford at all and it's not really something that I wish I had done. I know that it's a very special event, but my career went in a very different way."
"I'm staying with Jacques [Villeneuve] in the British American Racing team and I'm really positive about things for next year because we know where we are with the car this year and we know where we need to go next year - everybody is working very hard back at the factory to achieve that. Also, Honda have a completely new engine for next year and I saw it in Tokyo before the Japanese Grand Prix and it's a big, big change. I'm very positive about the engine too. Next year is a big step forward and it will be very good."
