Nick Heidfeld Q&A
Nick Heidfeld's first season with Sauber has got off to a fantastic start, with the German following up his fourth place in Australia with a third in Brazil. It's all very different from last year, when he finished only five times in 17 attempts, and failed to score a single point. Peter Sauber made a wise choice when he decided to take on Heidfeld, and other teams are now taking an interest in the 23-year-old, who was largely overlooked during the influx of young talent over the winter. And he still has a relationship with McLaren-Mercedes that could see him back in one of the silver cars should a vacancy arise. Adam Cooper asked him about the season so far
"It was great. I didn't expect to be on the podium so soon after scoring my first points in Australia. My next goal was obviously to go on the podium, but I didn't think it would happen this season. The whole team was really surprised, and it was really fun."
"So far in my career it was the toughest season, although I had one bad year of karting as well, when I learned quite a lot. But one year would have been enough!"
"Well, Alain Prost chose not to take me again. He had an option, but it was quite a difficult situation, so I had to look around. Sauber was the best option for me, and so far it looks like it was the right choice."
"Yes, definitely. Already in testing we saw that it was going quite well, and I was surprised then, but now the season's started it looks even better. I'm sure that we were quite lucky in the first few races, but the results are there."
"Well, I think each team which is at the top, like McLaren and Ferrari and Williams, has the right to be there. They are not there just by luck. I think Sauber is on the right way, but we have to keep pushing. For the amount of money we have at Sauber, we are doing a good job. We don't have a big engine supplier. OK, we have the Petronas engine, which is the old Ferrari engine, but for sure there are some engines which are better."
"Yeah, I know they've had a problem with that in the last couple of years. But already this season we've got new parts from race to race. That's really what we have to work on. But then again it's more difficult for us than other teams, because they have a lot more backing and can produce a lot more parts and test a lot more things than we can."
"Yes, it definitely helps. It's not a massive difference, but it is better for sure."
"It's most important to have somebody next to you who's quick, and is good at setting up the car and pushing the team. The age doesn't matter so much in the end, but he's doing a really great job so far."
